How to choose a chart palette
Choosing the right palette type is critical for accurately conveying information in data visualization.
- Categorical: Use for nominal data (apples, oranges, bananas). The colors should be distinct so users can easily match the legend to the chart marks. Limit the number of categories to 5–7 if possible to avoid overwhelming the viewer.
- Sequential: Use for ordinal or continuous quantitative data (0–100, low–high). Use lightness to encode the value so it can be intuitively understood without checking a legend.
- Diverging: Use for quantitative data with a natural zero or midpoint (negative–positive, disagree–agree). Ensure the midpoint is a neutral color like white or light gray.
